One step at a time

One step at a time

“People say, ‘What is the sense of our small effort?’ They cannot see that we must lay one brick at a time, take one step at a time.”
—Dorothy Day

M

y unconscious mantra before Zen training was “When I get this for myself, then…THEN I will be happy.” I always saw “success” as a place I would arrive to someday and from there, it would all be smooth sailing. Unfortunately (and fortunately), that was never the case. There is no shortcut to the promised land. No instant passage.

We must practice steadily with absolute devotion. We need to pay attention NOW during the times when the voices aren’t clawing at us or pulling us down into misery, so that we may be fortified and ready for action when they do. You see, when we’re being dragged down to hell, it’s too late to have the life raft inflated.

Prevention is the best medicine and it is done one moment at a time with the smallest effort. And it’s always now.

In lovingkindness,
