Is It Compassionate?


 

I

spent many years training in a Zen monastery to discover that compassion is an inside-out experience. Many of the things my teacher did to train the monks would not “look compassionate” to the outside world.

Because sometimes compassion would come in like a whisper and at other times it would come in like a roar.

First and foremost, compassion is a transformation of how an individual relates to her or himself. It requires some waking up.

So while an action may appear to be “measurably” compassionate, one can never really tell. Because who is going to have the big picture perspective to know?

I’m not suggesting that we hold back from sharing generously, practicing inclusion, expressing kindness, or embracing understanding. It’s just that those things are a by-product of an awakened heart.
