Guidance Appointments

W

hile I was training at the Zen monastery, my teacher would periodically show up onto the property to offer the monks guidance appointments.

These short appointments were held in a secluded gazebo tucked in the woods behind the main building.

We would walk up a winding path at the time of our appointment, ring a bell by a bench positioned several yards from the gazebo, take a seat, and wait for a reply bell from within to signal it was time to enter.

Once inside, it was our opportunity to sit face to face with our teacher and bring anything we wanted that was going on in our practice to receive guidance.

Today, I periodically offer virtual guidance appointments via Zoom.

How are guidance appointments different from coaching?

Coaching is a long-term commitment to ongoing transformational work—typically in the form of a project or a defined outcome co-created by you and me. It includes support in-between sessions through emails and resources, and the results you get are produced through the cumulative work we do together.

Guidance appointments are isolated calls set up to assist and support you on an “as needed” basis. Since we will not be working on a project, there will be no homework assignments given nor support communications before or after the calls.

If you have questions about any of this, please do not hesitate to contact me.

When I went into my guidance appointment with Alex, I was looking for ideas on how to improve my wellbeing, my level of compassion and a way to find more peace in my day-to-day.

To my awesome surprise, I had a very uplifting conversation with Alex. He was not only caring, but he was paying attention to every single word I said. I remember how impressed I was when, almost at the end of our conversation, he pretty much remembered the first words I had spoken to him during our call. I could feel he was right there, at that moment, with me. During that time, nothing else mattered. That was pretty special.

During our appointment, we did a little exercise on compassion, and I remember how hard it was for me to feel love for myself, how hard it was for me to come up with nice words to tell myself. Funny, he guided me through the exercise and I was amazed that I was able to be loving to the rest of the world, but me.

Right there, I knew I wanted to work with him and do the online retreat (that has been absolutely eye and heart-opening). I signed up and I am currently doing it. It is not difficult, yet challenging and that is a good thing! I am so very thankful and grateful for Alex!

I feel happier, centered, and at peace. I know there are situations that cannot be changed, and I accept them with love.

If you have the opportunity to work with Alex, don’t hesitate and schedule a call with him, you will be delighted. Give yourself the opportunity, it is a wonderful treat!

I was seeking help to quiet the voices in my head through meditation, as I have been struggling with focus and direction at this new junction in my life.

During my appointment, I learned that the voices in my head were never going to be quiet, just redirected through meditation.

As a result of our conversation, I have begun meditating and focusing on my breath. Every time I have a stray thought, I gently guide myself back to my breathing. This seems fairly simple, however, the shift has mitigated the frustration I have had with my meditation practice.

Alex is very insightful and can help guide your progress, however, you must be willing to do the work.

I wanted to know or have a better understanding of how to relate to a person I knew.

I learned that I needed to be more empathic, that sometimes people won’t be where I think they should be in life. Just because I’ve experienced a certain set of circumstances and have come to believe something, that doesn’t necessarily mean that’s the case for all people.

As a result of this guidance appointment, I learned to have a greater sense of compassion for others. To understand that if we can start at a place of compassion, we can grow with others in their journey of life.
